I’ve been asked several times why and how did I become a vegetarian. When I started my journey to healthy and sustainable living, I stopped meat first. Then, I started to eliminate other unhealthy food groups along the way. Don’t get me wrong, I still have my snacks & occasionally splurge on some sweets. I just like to bring mindfulness to eating, and in order to do so, I had to start researching what was in my food.
Transitioning to a plant-based life is difficult in the beginning. The best advice I can give you is to do your research! You’ll begin to find the journey to plant-based living much smoother, once you start reading. Don’t rush the process. Watch the documentaries! Highlight and annotate the books! Don’t be afraid to ask questions. You have the opportunity and responsibility to take over your health. Either make the change to a healthier lifestyle or get prepared to live a life of illness and ailments. I went ahead a made a list of my most favorite books! I hope this is helpful!
This was the first book I read discussing plant-based nutrition. It was my sign to get my shi* together. The book focuses on Collin’s 35-year study on nutrition and diseases. He breaks down his research both in the lab and in rural countries. It’s fascinating to see the correlation of between diseases and geographical locations. I will be honest; it’s a hard read. I enjoy scientific research, and it still took a month and a half to get through

This one is the last one of the trio. I read this one just because I like to know it all. Haha. As the collection grows, you learn more and more about plant-based nutrition, new scientific research and some recipes to try.
The Happy Vegan: A Guide to Living a Long, Healthy, and Successful Life

My absolute favorite. Such an easy read! Simmons covers a variety of ideas and concepts related to plant-based nutrition. When my friends ask for advice on how to get started, I direct them to this book FIRST. Why?
1. Because it’s written by a black man in modern day society.
2. Because it can be read in less than 3 days.
3. Out of all the books I read, I can relate to this one this mostly because it’s written from a minority point of view. None of the other books discuss slavery & it’s correlation with nutrition.
How Not to Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease

Just to give myself credit, I read this book WAY before he was featured on “ What the health” documentary. Each chapter represents a different disease and its relationship to diet. He incorporates more than 300 studies. The appendix itself can be a different book! haha
After the chapters on different diseases, he adds a chapter for 12 different food groups. From cruciferous veggies to beans. All chapters providing benefits of the specific food groups & how you can incorporate it in your lifestyle.
After reading the chapter on heart disease/cholesterol maintenance. I suggested my dad go on a strict regimen. In just six weeks he lowered his cholesterol more than 70 points.. The most rewarding feeling is being able to teach my family. I owe that to Dr. Greger.
It was hard to pick my top 5, so I’m just going to add the rest of them as well.
