It drives me crazy when I hear people say that they are ‘ staying away from sugar’ and refuse to eat fruits. In order for our bodies to provide the energy we need, to get through the day, we need sugar. Not sugar from snickers, m&m’s, ice cream or cookies. Natural sugar; which includes yummy fruits.
I just wanted to put together a simple excerpt & image to help you guys differentiate between refined & natural sugars.
The refinement of sugar consists of stripping away all essential vitamins. The word refined literally means ‘ with impurities or unwanted elements having been removed by processing’. So when you see the word refined, think of empty calories. Food that may provide immediate satisfaction without necessary vitamins. (this goes for both refined sugar and refined grains)
In order for our bodies to appropriately digest and metabolize sugar, we need other essential vitamins. When we strip those nutrients, the body has to use vitamins from other areas. For example, calcium and magnesium from our bones. So when your feeling achy, lethargic or even drowsy; your most likely lacking the essential vitamins you need to maintain homeostasis. This can be fixed if you removed processed food.
Our bodies contain free radicals, basically bad cells, for lack of a better word. They cause havoc to cell regeneration & growth. In turn, causing unnecessary mutation of necessary cell life. Anti-oxidants work against those guys! Protecting the body from free-radicals and further damage. Incorporating a couple of servings of fruits can be extremely beneficial to overall health because of their natural antioxidant properties.
When you’re picking out your fruits (& veggies) always pick the brighter food. For example, red onion over white onion. Red cabbage over green etc. The brightest veggies have the most antioxidants.
